Global I&T Summit

CPII is honored to support the Global Innovation and Technology Summit organized by the Innovation and Technology Commission of the HKSAR Government on 15th December 2022 at Hong Kong Science Park. The event was officiated by the Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry, Professor Sun Dong and the Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Ms Rebecca Pun. Our Centre Director, Professor Helen Meng, served as invited panel speaker on the topic of “AI and humanness “ in the Global I&T Summit. She shared her thoughts about technological equity, and her experience in tackling data bias and enhancing social inclusion, especially in her research in the field of speech and language technologies . Professor Meng emphasized the important of conducting research through an equity lens. She also advised that users of different technologies should be aware that data bias tend to lead to inherent bias in AI models and therefore the outputs (decisions) from AI technologies may not always be desirable as expected. The Summit featured presidents’ forum, two keynote speeches, two panel discussions, InnoHK session and “Dialogue with the younger generation” with the participation of 30 world-class scientists, presidents of renowned institutes and industry leaders. CPII talk: Simulation, Sensing and Control of Soft Robots

Researchers have devoted to developing a variety of soft robotic systems in the laboratory to take advantage of compliance introduced by soft materials. While being able to mimic natural systems and building compatible robots working together with humans, the challenge of lacking computational tools in design also dampens the development of soft robotics in industrial applications. Specifically, the design and control practices taken in soft robotics at present are mainly based on intuition and trial-and-error empirical tests. In this talk, I am going to introduce our recent work to overcome these challenges by simulating, sensing and controlling the motion of soft robots. The effectiveness of our approach has been verified on pneumatic-driven soft robots for path following, interactive positioning and target-based deformation control.
