The Ultrafast Oscillating Blade Microtome Technology Was Awarded a Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva

EVENT | MAY | 2022

CPII is pleased to announce that our Principal Investigator Professor Chen Shih-Chi has been awarded the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in recognition of his contribution to the city’s innovation ecosystem.

The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva is the world’s most prestigious award devoted exclusively to inventions. This year, the event was held virtually on 16 - 20th March and attracted nearly 800 inventions from 25 countries and regions. Total 78 awards were scooped by HKSTP’s partner companies, while Prof Chen’s team contributed to one of the triumphs.

Project description: Ultra Oscillating Blade Microtome

The outstanding innovation of Prof Chen is the invention of ultrafast oscillating blade microtome. It is designed based on a multi-symmetric compliant mechanism and active vibration control, enables the precise sectioning of soft materials, such as fresh tissues and hydrogels, that is previously impossible. Notably, sectioning of ultra-soft materials, e.g., optically cleared or expanded mouse brain, is made possible by exploiting the viscoelastic effect, i.e., bio-materials self-stiffen at high frequency. This invention can help address key challenges in novel bio-imaging applications, creating huge market value for the pathology and biophotonics industries.
